Finding Aid and Transcription Links Canadiana books inventory (file 4, series 1 of Peter S. Schmalz fonds)
Provenance These books were part of the personal library of Dr. Peter Schmalz, created over a thirty-five year period, for the purpose of researching and writing history related mainly to the First Nations of Bruce County. As Dr. Schmalz was isolated from a major library, it was more economical and/or convenient to buy the necessary books, microfilm and other resources. Dr. Schmalz used his library to research and write a master's thesis, a doctoral thesis, numerous learned articles, several books, and reports for the Ministry of Natural Resources, First Nations communities, the provincial government, and the federal government. The library reflects his major interest in aboriginal contact with Europeans. As Dr. Schmalz explains, "Almost all of the travel, war, and missionary books, microfilm, audio tapes, etc., in some way enlighten the reader on the complexity of this contact. Many are written by the indigenous peoples."
