Description |
Robert B. Hillmer was born in Oakville in 1874. He was trained as a watchmaker by his uncle and he moved to Port Elgin to set up a jewellery shop. However, he did not find success there and swiftly relocated to Southampton in 1901. In Southampton he initially slept on a cot at the back of the shop he rented. Not to be deterred, he had far better success in Southampton, running an extensive watch repair business and even branching out to offer optician services as well. Allowing him to live comfortably with his family until his passing in 1959. Sources: Provenance for 961.012.021 Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre. A2011.039.001.
