Description |
A gold pocket watch with chain fob. The watch body (part a) is 18k gold and has two flat front sides that are on a hinge to close. One front side has an engraved 'S' and the hinge is on the bottom. The back side is plain and the hinge is slightly off to the side. The inside of the front side has text engraved that reads "Presented by the President of the United States to Captain John Spence of the Canadian Schooner Nemesis in recognition of services rendered the American Propeller New York". The watch has a white face with black roman numerals and a single hand (one is missing) and a single chronometer near the bottom. The back side of the watch opens from a small lip on the side edge and reveals the maker's mark engraved reading "No.5716 T.S & J.D. Negus New York". The opposite side has small text engraved by hand with various numbers and letters/symbols. There is a small stamped maker's mark reading "Warranted 18k 5716". The back opens to reveal the mechanism that also has the maker's engraving "T.S & J.D. Negus New York" with a different serial number "No.11170". There is a gold ring (part b) that would hold the glass in place that sits on top of the face. The top of the watch has a tall knob with a ring attached through it. The ring holds the gold chain (part c) with a clasp. The end of the chain has a long cylinder shape holder that is similar to a 'T' shape. |
