Video recording documenting an interview with Ken Gowanlock and Janet Gowanlock. 01:16- William Gowanlock and his wife left Scotland in 1842 and settled north of Toronto where they remained for 8 years. Had 6 sons and 3 daughters. In 1850s Bruce County offered large families land to clear so they migrated up to Saugeen [Township]. 02:49- Settled Lots 21 and 22 on Concession 7. Built house and barn. The barn was referred to as Cedar Hall and church services were held in this barn for some time. 03:42- William took up close to one thousand acres surrounding and settled his sons on these lots. Seven generations lived on Lot 20 on Concession 9. 05:46- Ken Gowanlock's father was Andrew Gowanlock, who was the grandson of William Gowanlock. 06:05- Ken attended Gowanlock School and attended Port Elgin High School and began in 1938 via horse and buggy or horse and cart. 07:03- Ken was interested in livestock and kept sheep, horses, and cattle. 07:33- In 1946, Ken became Secretery Treasurer for Township School Area Board. 07:58- Ken and Janet were married in 1948. 08:11- Janet was born on Concession 12 Arran Township. She drove horses and tractors on a family farm. 08:52- In the time of the war, Janet joined the West Arran Home Helpers, and they knitted socks, sweaters and did sewing for the army. This group then became the West Arran Women's Institute and Janet was the treasuer. Janet later joined the Burgoyne Women's Institute. 09:45- Janet had an interest in quilting and crafts. 11:03- Ken and his father logged trees from the forest and expanded the barn in 1958. 11:10- At the same time, they began into Holstein cattle. 12:03- Within a few years they were milking between 60 and 70 cows. They also sold breeding stock that went to France, England, Mexico, USA, Brazil, and Spain. 13:00- They would show cattle locally and Ken would judge the cattle shows. 14:12- All the Holstein herd was dispersed in 1990. This was the end of the milking. 15:01- Ken Gowanlock remained Secretery Treasurer for Township School Area Board until 1967, and he resigned when Saugeen and Port Elgin board amalgamated. 15:20- In 1964, Ken became the Saugeen Council Clerk Treasurer, and remained in that position until 1972. He then became tile drain inspector for Township for a number of years. 16:05- Ken received recognition for forty-seven years of municipal service in 1993. 16:21- Gowanlock family was presbyterian and were instrumental in forming the Dunblane Congregation and forming Dunblane Church. Ken is involved in Burgoyne Congregation and church. 17:42- In 1968 the Dunblane Church closed and joined with Burgoyne. The Dunblane Church was re-erected in 1981 and committee was formed to look after it. Ken was chair of that committee. They held one service a year on the first weekend in August. The church was originally built in 1859. 19:18- Operated bed and breakfast at Lot 20 at Concession 9 in early 1980s. Guests would come from Ontario cities as well as from overseas such as England, France, and Germany. 22:36- Ken kept two hives of bees in 1946 and eventually had fifty colonies. 24:10- Ken had chickens that he showed at local fairs such as Tara, Kincardine, Port Elgin, and Owen Sound. 25:04- Ken would repair and fix up old buggies, and Janet would re-upholster the seating. 28:40- Video footage of Ken's buggy and sleigh collection that he has purchased and fixed up over the years |
