A limited edition reproduction print, #5/330, of an original pencil drawing / rendering by artist James Paddon. The print image is black and white and depicts the former Paisley Inn building located in Paisley, Ontario, during its 'heyday' of the late 1950s-1960s. The brick building was 3 storeys including a 4 storied tower at the front. The drawing includes 3 signs out front of the Inn, reading "PAISLEY INN / HOTEL MODERN ROOMS / Entertainment DINING ROOM". Two automobiles are partially visible in the foreground including a couple walking towards the main entrance. The artist marked the original sketch in the bottom left corner border with "© J. Paddon." This print is 5/330 and is indicated on the bottom left white border of the paper. The lower centre border bears the title "PAISLEY INN." The artist signed the print in the bottom right border corner "J. Paddon". Technique: Realism The print is accompanied by an information sheet created by the artist including this description: "PAISLEY INN By James D. Paddon © 2024." A reproduction of an original pencil drawing depicting the Paisley Inn at Paisley Ontario during its heyday of the late 1950s and 60s. Originally built in 1863 as a two storied hotel, it was dramatically renovated with the addition of a third floor and a four storied tower in 1890. It became known as the Grand Central Hotel in 1901. After lengthy periods of limited success and a multitude of owners the Grand Dame on Queen Street became the Paisley Inn on or about 1956 when the ban on liquor sales was lifted. The Inn was the place to be for locals as well as others from miles around. It was a highly desired place for couples looking for excellent dining while enjoying the best of live entertainment. The good times would eventually come to an end and after sitting dormant for many years it was demolished in 2021 to make way for new development by a local corporation. With architectural plans to maintain a streetscape reminiscent of the old inn, construction began in 2024. With the opening of the new bridge crossing the Teeswater River on the main thoroughfare in combination with this and other developments, Paisley is well on its way in its new revival." |
Provenance |
The limited edition reproduction print is from the original pencil rendering titled "Paisley Inn" by artist James Paddon. James Paddon's drawings have a connection to Bruce County through personal stories and recognizable landmarks. He likes to reminisce and tell stories people can relate to. This rendering was inspired by a photograph in the BCM&CC collection. The artist took license to modify the scale, including distance between buildings, and landscape to ensure buildings and areas of interest are visible in his rendering. |
