Description |
This scrapbook consists of items concerning the sinking of the lake freighter S.S. Kamloops, the deaths of Alice Emma Bettridge and Nettie Grafton, and the discovery of a letter /note written by Alice Bettridge after the sinking. The contents primarily consist of newspaper clippings published between December 1927 and 1928 in unidentified newspapers. Statements made at the beginning of many newspaper articles include source references such as: Port Arthur; Houghton, Michigan; Canadian Press Despatch; Special Despatch to the Globe; Toronto; by Associated Press; Special to the Star; Special to the Sun-Times; Southampton; and Sault Ste. Marie. A few of the clippings feature photographs of Alice Bettridge, Nettie Grafton and/or the freighter Kamloops. One original photograph included in the scrapbook features Alice Bettridge with a friend. Also included are telegrams sent to H. Bettridge [Alice's father, Henry Bettridge] from Canada Steamship Lines, Montreal, through Canadian National Telegram dated June 6 and June 7, 1928, concerning the discovery of the bodies of six crew members, and arrangements for returning the body of Alice Bettridge to Southampton. A couple of articles included in the scrapbook mention the wrecks of other ships during the same December storm, including the wreck of the Steamer Lambton. The Lambton articles mention the deaths of two young people: Elmer Baird (Wiarton) and Ivan Moon (Owen Sound). |
