Admin/Biographical History |
PROBUS, a club for retired and semi-retired professional and business people, originated in England in 1965. The word PROBUS is an abbreviation of the words Professional and Business, but membership is not restricted to these two groups. The first PROBUS Club in Canada was established in Cambridge, Ontario on March 17, 1987. The PROBUS Club of Port Elgin and District was founded by Thomas Owen "Ace" Bailey in February1989, after a trip to Australia during which he met a PROBUS member who convinced him that such an organization would be good for Port Elgin. Rotary President, Gerry Moss, chaired the organizational meeting, assisted by "Ace" Bailey and visitor, Bud Crooks, from the Probus Club of Georgian Triangle. The Club was initially named "Probus Club of Port Elgin". The name changed on May 5, 1989 to "Port Elgin and District Probus Club". In July 1999, the name changed to "Probus Club of Saugeen shores" to reflect the newly amalgamated town of Saugeen Shores. As of 2010, the Club continues to operate. The purpose of the Club is to provide regular gatherings for retired and semi-retired professional and business men, and others with like backgrounds, who, in their retirement, appreciate and value the increased opportunities for social contacts, meeting others, hearing addresses on, and discussing topical subjects, or arranging visits by members to places and organizations. An Associated Membership dedicated to the widows of deceased Probians is an integral part of the club policy. The Club is non-political, non-sectarian and not a fundraising or service organization. Probus clubs are not service organizations. Probus clubs are autonomous, although Probus Centre-Canada, Inc. was formed to provide service, disseminate information and promote new clubs. Regular meetings, fellowship, sports and special events are a continuing part of club activities. Guest speakers at regular meetings provide interesting and informative presentations including topics such as travel, medicine, geology, local services development, genealogy and police and fire services. Events have covered a well-balanced variety of programs, including theatre, museum visits, fall colour tours, industrial plant visits, local historic site tours, sporting events. Golf tournaments, lawn bowling, curling, pool tournaments and bridge are on-going events. A Management Committee was responsible for the operations of the Club. That Committee has generally consisted of the following positions and committee leaders: President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Special Events, Guest Speakers, Who Am I, Sports, Newsletter, Probus Liaison, Membership, Visitation and Telephone, Sergeant-at-Arms, Auditors. Presidents of the Probus Club of Saugeen Shores have included: T.O. "Ace" Bailey, Bill Edwards, Bob Appell, Vern Johnson, Pete Boisvert, Alf Johnson, Malte Stalhbrand, Gill Pether, Bill Colborne, Art Field, Ed Flowers, Gord Hutton, Bruce Wallace, Fred Catherwood, Tony Porter, Paul Bentley, Paul Schult, Ken Ives, Ron MacKay, Peter Weale and Gord Boyd. |
