Ledger of accounts and dues of the "Phoenix Legion No. 22 S.K. A.O.U.W." (Ancient Order of United Workmen) The first section of the ledger consists of dues paid by members. Each member is entered by page, tracking payment of dues. The second section of the ledger records the accounts, including dues, beneficiary fund payments and expenses for the organization. Accounts were audited by T. Whitehead and J.S. Tolton in 1891, 93, 94, 95, 96, and 97. In 1891 and 1893, the auditors note their location as Walkerton. The Ancient Order of United Workmen was a "fraternal, charitable, beneficial and benevolent Society or order organized for the promotion of the welfare, social and fraternal good of its members, and the protection of those dependent upon them." (General Laws of the AOUW, 1879, as referenced in "Bruce Township Tales and Trails") This organization originated in the United States ca. 1868. The Grand Lodge of Ontario split from its American parent very early on, in approximately 1878. The assets and operations of the Ancient Order of United Workmen of Ontario were acquired by the Independent Order of Foresters in 1926.
