These photocopied documents are part of series 2, file 1 (Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation related documents - Saugeen Nawash claims). This consists of 18 folders, labelled by years follows: 1854, 1856, 1857, 1858, 1859, 1860, 1861, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1865, 1866, 1867, 1869, 1870s, 1879, 1885-86, 1890s Caldwell. The contents of the folders were chiefly copied from microfilm and resources held at the National Archives of Canada (now Library and Archives Canada), including material from NAC's reference number RG 10 (including parts of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development fonds). The folders include documents related to Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation, as well as other First Nations, such as copies of transcribed treaties, Indian Affairs reports, correspondence between Department of Indian Affairs and various bands and government agents (including Anderson and Oliphant), some transcripts of correspondence, petitions and claims, including but not limited to the following documents/topics: "1858" - "The late Ojibwa occupation of the Beaver Valley", from Charles Garrad, "100 years of archaeology in the Beaver Valley", 1986 re: 1857 removal of Newash people to Cape Croker. "1859" - "Petition of the Chief and Indians of the Ojibway Tribe composing the Owen Sound Band, now at Cape Croker" re: land of Mrs. Catharine Sutton; Correspondence re: White Fish Island, Fishing Islands rent not paid and George Jardine bankrupt. "1860" - Transcriptions from William Sutton journal; Nah-nee-bah-wee-quay / Catherine Sutton reproduction photograph; Power of Attorney from Chiefs to Catharine Sutton; Kettle Point correspondence; Correspondence re: David Black has left his wife. "1861" - Excerpts from Rev. Peter Jones' "History of the Ojebway Indians with especial reference to their Conversion to Christianity" and his "Life and Journals"; and correspondence re: "Colpoy's Bay Indians and Cape Croker Band". 1861 population of Bruce County townships. "1863" - Indian Affairs, Saugeen and Cape Croker correspondence; Names of Cape Croker Indigenous people receiving payment for improvements at Nawash (John Williams, Widow Jones, David Black, Tabegwon, William Augers, John Tomain, ...). "1864" - Fishing Islands. Moses Madwayosh suspension as interpreter at Saugeen. "1865" - Correspondence re: division of annuities-Colpoy's Bay Band, to Saugeen and Cape Croker. Saugeen vaccinated for smallpox (Dr. William Scott). (No lists of names). "1866" - Names of Saugeen fishermen (Surnames include: James, Wahbegee, Kewagehon, Cameron, Wahbezee, Kahgee, Jones); Land sale on Manitoulin Island "1867" - Correspondence re: Saugeen First Nations individual arrested for killing a deer "out of season;" Letter re: Moses Monidogwewis's lot; Letter re: Baptist Beauvin wants to move to Saugeen from Cape Croker. "1869" - Correspondence re: surrender of Saugeen Reserve to complete road from Owen Sound to Southampton. "1870s" - Correspondence to Dept of Marine & Fisheries re: Saugeen First Nations purchase of fishing equipment from John Denny of Saugeen; Sauble River fishing license correspondence; Interpreters Henry Jones resigning and appointing George Henry; Various correspondence re: land at mouth of Saugeen River; Unsold lands in Northern Bruce Peninsula, list of blankets delivered to Indigenous people at Saugeen and Cape Croker; Cape Croker Band purchasing modern farm equipment from land sales account; J.S. Johns appointed 31st Battalion Band Member, Musical instruments; Salaries paid to band members; Factionalism at Cape Croker; Protest fishing limits at Saugeen. At the time this material was created and compiled by the donor, the department of the Government of Canada responsible for Canada's northern lands and territories was called "Department of Indian Affairs" (sometimes shortened to "Indian Affairs"). This entity was changed and renamed several times between 1966 and 2019 (in 2011, 2015, and 2017). On July 15, 2019, legislation came into effect dissolving "Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada" and establishing 2 new departments, "Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs [Canada]" (CIRNAC) and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).
