Part of series 1 of the James and Elizabeth Burgess family fonds, this is a sample of one of 13 diaries written by James Rowand Burgess, born December 31, 1890, son of Christina Thompson Rowand and William Burgess of Port Elgin, Bruce County, Ontario. In the diary, an entry is generally made for each day from December 25, 1911 - September 29, 1914. Topics covered in the diary include: - social and church activities, including visits from family members, Farmer's Institute meetings, Sunday School, and an excursion to Guelph (including a baseball match and a moving picture show); - weather; - farm work (hay), including work related to planting potatoes and corn; - fishing; - health, dentist appointments; - the sinking of the Titantic (Wednesday, April 17, 1912 "Mr. C. M. Hayes was on board. It is not known who escaped and who did not."); and - Birthday and Christmas presents.
