"Manual of Map Reading and Field Sketching, 1912." (Reprinted, with additions, 1914), is a military manual issued by command of the [British] Army Council "for the guidance of all concerned". Table of Contents headings include: - Introductions - Definitions - Scales - Conventional Signs and Lettering - British and Foreign Maps, and Methods of Representing Hill Features - Copying and Enlarging Maps - The Service (Prismatic) Compass and Protractor. Their Use in Map Reading and Marching - Approximate Methods of Finding the True North - Map Reading - General Principles of Sketching - Sketching with a Cavalry Sketching Board - Enlarging Small Scale Map and Adding Extra Information on the Ground - Reports - Eye and Memory Sketching - Plane-Table Sketching - Panorama Drawing - Elementary Instruction in Marching by the Stars Also included is a 19 page alphabetical listing of military books published by "Authority" for the Briitsh Military. Inscribed on the first page is "WC Ostic. 177th OS Bn. CEF". |

This item belonged to Lieutenant William Clark Ostic during his service in the First World War. It was part of the contents of his foot locker while in service. His foot locker and its contents were donated to the BCM&CC in 2017. Ostic was born December 12, 1887 in Walkerton, Ontario. He served with the 4th Battalion Canadian Infantry and was killed in action on August 8, 1918. |
