Admin/Biographical History |
The Bruce County Federation of Agriculture (BCFA) began as a response to the high food production demands of Britain during the Second World War. After a meeting held in London, where 1500 farmers showed up to talk to the Canadian Minister of Agriculture, James Gardiner, about prices for their produce. A week later the reeves of Bruce County met in Walkerton to speak to County Council. By February of 1940 the BCFA was official. The first president of BCFA, William Nicholson, who also was then appointed director of the Ontario Federation of Ontario (OFA). After the war the demand disappeared when Britain began buying from European suppliers once again. With little support from the government the farmers became distrustful of any directions the government provided. As of 2024 the BCFA "represents [and supports the interest of] over 1500 farms and farm families in Bruce County". By the 1950s things began to pick up as advertising became more frequent and diverse. Along with the increased advertising the board also began to welcome delegates from the Junior Farmers Clubs and Women's Institutes. Taken from their website the BCFA mission statement is "The Bruce County Federation of Agriculture works for the economic and social well being of the agricultural community, through leadership, advocacy and cooperation." The BCFA works with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) as well as other agriculture organizations throughout the area to further "the interests of farmers". The BCFA also is a supporter of educational youth and adult organizations and co-operatives throughout the county. Sources: Cossitt, Chris.
