Description |
This volume is part of series 2 (Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation related documents), file 1 (Saugeen Nawash claims). The volume now consists of three folders (marked 2010.099.1000a-c), containing documents numbered intermittently from 9 - 610, chiefly copied from microfilm and resources held at the National Archives of Canada (now Library and Archives Canada), including material from NAC RG 1, RG 10 (including parts of treatise and surrenders series and Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development fonds) and MG 11-series Q (colonial correspondence). The documents concern tribes of the Ojibway Nation, including Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation. Many documents are concerning treaties, surrenders and rights to land in what is now Grey and Bruce Counties, as well as the Saugeen Ojibway Nation Territories and Port Credit. Post-it notes on the documents contain notes handwritten by Dr. Peter Schmalz. Includes copies of treaties, petitions, submissions by the Superintendent General of Indian Affairs, government reports, Department of Indian Affairs correspondence, transcripts of correspondence, articles from Christian Guardian, "Statement of history of the Pottawattomies now residing at Kettle Point and of their ancestors", and a memorandum concerning the Pottawatomie Indians of Wisconsin now residing in Canada. In particular, folder 2 contains a report to Governor General concerning potential changes in, or abolishment of, the Indian Department from the Superintendent General, 1855, (122 pages), including statements about property, land claims, land sales, inter-cultural relations, financing and Imperial aid, involvement of Churches and Missionaries, and proposals concerning schools and education of Indian children. In particular, folder 3 also contains copies of Minutes of a General Council held at the River Credit (1840, 1847) |
