Provenance |
The United Methodist Church in Underwood was located at 3617 Highway 21 at the southeast corner of Underwood. The brick church was built in 1876. The date of its official opening is unclear - records for Sunday School begin in 1901, however it is known to have been active earlier. The ministry was part of a three-point charge including Tiverton and Wesley. It closed in 1925 when Church Union resulted in the congregation joining that of the former Presbyterian Church across the road (built in 1875, located at 3630 Highway 21), in the newly named Underwood United Church, later known as Centre Bruce United Church. The original Methodist church building was eventually purchased by members of the Howe family who used it in a trucking and transport business ca. 1969. In 1977, a tornado destroyed the building. Building upgrades occurred in the late 1940s, and a new manse was built in 1977 on the lot adjoining the church. Dwindling membership led to the decision to close the Underwood United Church in June, 2019. Sources: Heritage Kincardine. "Bruce Township’s Places of Interest Driving Tour." 2015. Print.
