Admin/Biographical History |
The idea to host an Air Show came from Nick Cassidy (former Snowbird Pilot) of Burgoyne, and Barry Tschirhart of Port Elgin, both of whom were involved with the local Air Cadets. The show was intended to raise funds for the Air Cadets and raise awareness in the community about aviation and aviation history. The planning for the show came together in a relatively short period of time. Snowbird pilot Capt. Emmanual Belanger did a site inspection of Port Elgin in early March 2000 and said the Port Elgin beach provided a perfect location for an aerial show. A storefront office was established in downtown Port Elgin to raise awareness of the event and sell fundraising Booster Buttons for $5 each. All purchasers were given an opportunity to win an aerobatic flight with one of the pilots of the Snowbirds or a print. The winner of the aerobatic flight was Linda Cameron of Port Elgin. Admission to the Canadian Aviation Appreciation Evening banquet at The Plex, 600 Tomlinson Dr., Port Elgin, on the evening of May 23 was through purchased tickets. The media were also invited to the banquet, at which Bill Bryce and Bill Keany spoke about the history of Aviation. Nick Cassidy was master of ceremonies. Raffle tickets were sold at the banquet for a flight to anywhere Air Canada flies. The winner of this raffle was Ovid Jackson, MP of Owen Sound. Earlier in the day, before the event, snowbird performers and Bill Carter, with Air Combat Canada, attended some of the schools to give a presentation to the students. The Media were also offered flights with Air Combat Canada on Tuesday May 23, 2000. Admission to the Air Show on May 24, 2000 was free or by donation. There was no gate to the show areas. The beach, harbour and Northshore Park were closed to general road traffic between 4 and 8 pm to create a show site. Buses ran from various locations down to the beach to transport spectators. Centre stage for the air show was the concrete pad just south of the First Base Restaurant and marked by a barge anchored offshore, provided by Willy's. The air performances were delayed due to rain showers; however, they were able to complete the show during a break in the weather. The organizers estimated 13,000 people attended the event. After the show on Wednesday, there was a reception at the Plex where people could meet some of the pilots. Sources: "Shoreline Beacon," March 15, 2000.
