This book has a brown cover with brown writing that reads "North Bay / Normal School / year book / 1923-1924". Below the title is a small picture of a genie lamp. Hand written on the first page is "Olive Mc Laughlin, / Chesley, Ontario." The title page reads "The / twelfth annual / year book / published by the / students of North Bay / Normal School / June, 1924" followed by a quote from Vergil's Aeneid. The year book contains brief articles and poems written by students about the events that took place during the 1923 - 1924 school year. These articles are accompanied by black and white pictures of the events. In the back of the book are lists of the school staff and the students with their home towns. Beside some of the names are notes about some of the students who have a connection to Bruce County. This includes a member of the "Bruce O.G.S. [in] 1986" and someone who moved from Lucknow to Kincardine. Not all of the students with connections to Bruce County are annotated. Olive, herself, is only noted with a small black mark next to her name. In the space titled "Autographs" on the last two pages are six names in black ink and one annotation written in blue ink. On the inside of the back cover are the numbers 1 through 7 written vertically. Number 1 reads "Leaning tower of Pisa", number 2 "Parthenon", number 3, "Coliseum", and number 4 "Pyramids". Numbers 5, 6, and 7 remain blank. |
Admin/Biographical History |
Olive Christina McLaughlin was born December 25, 1903 to parents Catherine Haug and Gilbert McLaughlin. She was "born on adjacent / farm to the west" of the McLaughlin family farm on Concession 10, lot 14 in Elderslie Township, Bruce County, Ontario. Olive and her younger sister Ethel grew up on the McLaughlin family farm and attended school together in Salem. During the First World War, Olive helped the war effort by knitting socks for soldiers. In 1918 the family sold the farm and moved to a house in Scone, across from the location of the Scone school. That same year Olive passed her exams and began to attend Chesley High School. In 1924 Olive attended North Bay Normal School. Once finished with school Olive began teaching, first in Haliburton District and then in Muskoka district. In 1930 she took a course on Home Economics at the MacDonald Institute in Guelph before moving to Toronto where she used her education to teach Home Economics from 1931 until 1966. |
