An oral history audio interview of John A. (Kater) Matheson, 78, of Southampton, conducted by M. Gentle on Aug. 11, 1979 and Nov. 6, 1979. Mr. Matheson mentions the names of many Southampton residents, and many locations and events. The audiocassette is accompanied by a typed manuscript in the form of a narrative which combines information from the interviewee and from other sources. The manuscript mentions topics such as: Eby house on Clarendon St.; animals and fish at Fairy Lake (Little Lake); school in Southampton; working on the harvest out west; St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church; shopping by train to Port Elgin; businesses in Southampton; fire bug, Mr. Self; doctors in Southampton; midwives; dentists; brick yard; Denny's Dam; Saugeen Electric Power Co.; gas and electric lights; sawmills at river and lake; curfew bell; restaurants; hotels; summer visitors; Sauble Beach; Depression years; 1913 storms; 1947 snowstorm; fish hatchery; Red Coats training; cemetery. |
