This folder is part of series 2, file 1 (Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation related documents - Saugeen Nawash claims). These photocopied documents (some of which were copied from the University of Western Ontario) include: "An address [to?] Chippeway Nation, written by George Copway", 1837 (Chief of Saugeen included as recipient); correspondence concerning where to live, financial matters, education and residential schools, timber licenses (particularly related to Sarnia Reserves) fisheries (related to Snake Island), and Wawanosh relations with U.S.A. Pottawatomies; "Minutes of the Indian Council of the Saugeen Reserve, Oct. 1855; "Sarnia Band Minutes 1856", and Census return of Chippewas of Sarnia, Bear Creek & Kettle Point 1865. Names in the correspondence include Wawanosh, Peter Jones, James Jarvis, Moses Madwayosh. Many of the photocopies contain handwritten notes and underlining in red ink, believed to have been made by the donor Dr. Peter S. Schmalz. |
