Description |
Referred to as a "book" by the donor, these documents (now consisting of 2 folders) are part of series 2, file 1 (Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation related documents - Saugeen Nawash claims). The documents are dated chronologically from 1853 - 1854 and were copied from microfilm and resources held at the National Archives of Canada (now Library and Archives Canada), including material chiefly from NAC's reference number RG 10, including parts of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development fonds. The documents include attendance reports of Indian schools including "Schedule of authorized occupants of lands belonging in the Christian Island Reserve, Georgian Bay"; Mount Elgin Industrial School and Aldverville Industrial School; Department of Indian Affairs correspondence; and "Account of pay and pensions due to the undermentioned persons" showing name and rank / employment, April 1853 (including Saugeen, Owen Sound, Colpoy's Bay and others); Questions and answers between Superintendent General and Indigneous people under Captain Anderson - "views upon the following points"; Indian Affairs report. Post-it notes and notes handwritten by Dr. Peter S. Schmalz concerning the contents of the documents are placed on some of the documents. Notes include "Saugeens protected by Anderson from imposter chiefs" and "Indicated in Dec 1853 the Saugeen Indians are unwilling to sell Sauble land;" "Anderson interested in Indian well being and their land;" "Anderson's rationale for surrenders." |

At the time this material was created and compiled by the donor, the department of the Government of Canada responsible for Canada's northern lands and territories was called "Department of Indian Affairs" (sometimes shortened to "Indian Affairs"). This entity was changed and renamed several times between 1966 and 2019 (in 2011, 2015, and 2017). On July 15, 2019, legislation came into effect dissolving "Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada" and establishing 2 new departments, "Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs [Canada]" (CIRNAC) and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC). The original inventory provided by the donor refers to this group of documents as "Book 8"; consequently, they are out of chronological order in relation to the documents in Books 1 and 3 catalogued as A2010.099.1033 & 1034.. "Book 2 - Saugeen Fisheries Report and documents - private and confidential" was not donated to the Archives Book 5 & 7 were also removed before donation. |
