Description |
Farmers' Central Mutual Fire Insurance Company policy for John Keyes for his house, stable, and log barn located at Concession 16, Lot 8 in Greenock Township. Dated June 22, 1896. The paper is embossed with the company's name and "Walkerton Ontario." J.J. Schumacher [sp.?] and James Tolton signed the first page. Several sections have been underlined on the reverse of the first page. |

James Keyes came to Canada from Carlow County, Ireland in 1818. He settled in Beckwith, Lanark County, Ontario. He married Hester Garland in 1822. They later moved to Gouldbourne Township, Carleton County. James came to Bruce County with his family except two of the girls, Mary and Clara, in 1855. They settled on Lot 5, Concession 17, Greenock Township. Hester Keyes died in the fall of 1858 and James died in May 1868. Both are buried in English Church Cemetery, Cargill, Ontario. Hester and James had thirteen children: Clara, Thomas, John, George, Ellen, Mary, Matilda, Margaret, James, Elizabeth, Esther, William and Phoebe. (SOURCE: A2012.085.S01.F01) |
