This video recording is the first of two tapes documenting several bicyclists riding penny-farthing bicyles between from Sauble Beach area to Southampton, Ontario, during the group's annual ride to the Meet of the Wheelmen. Includes the group's stop at the Bruce County Museum where the they provide penny-farthing demonstrations and displays in front of the Museum on Victoria Street, Southampton, Ontario. Summary: In 2001, vintage bicycles, including penny farthings, were filmed travelling between Sauble Beach and Southampton. The riders, organized by Prof. Glen Norcliffe of University of Toronto, demonstrated their skills at the Bruce County Museum, Southampton. Curator Barb Ribey introduced the riders and showed Norcliffe's 2001 book "The Bicycle in Canada." She announced an exhibit for 2002, "The County Bicycle Shop". In an interview, Norcliffe said the annual ride of the Wheelmen took eight days and covered 500 miles. The Bruce County Museum's "The County Bicycle Shop" exhibit referred to in the video was featured at the Bruce County Museum in the summer of 2002. It then became a travelling exhibit of two dozen bicycles and tricycles dating from the 1870s to 1950s, touring Wellington County Museum, Fergus; Fieldcote Museum, Ancaster; and McLaughlin Museum, Oshawa. Professor Geln Norcliffe of University of Toronto, produced a companion catalogue for the exhibit. |
