Ted McCannel": Capt. E.S. "Ted" McCannel honoured at his retirement as commanding officer of the 97th Batttery, R.C.A.(M) Walkerton. Arrival of farm help from Britain, single men and married men with families, was advertised in the Ripley Express, Feb. 1912; immigration officer George Mooney welcomed 100 men to Ripley. 1963 February, v5, #1 "Iron horse collar": in Bruce County Museum, iron horse collars, possibly by Fisher Foundry, Kincardine, about 1890. Fisher Foundry opened in 1860. Boss Grey of Grey's Castle pushed sales in Philadelphia. Ira Fisher moved there, then returned to Goderich. Medal for invention of clipper for boiler cork. His book. 1964 Sept., v6, #2 "The Fenian Raids": Near Bervie in Kinloss Twp. is an armouries. In Carrick Twp. a practical joker from Neustadt claimed the Fenians were coming, obliging the settlers to hole up in the church for two days. The volunteer militia of Paisley travelled to Southampton in June 1866, boarded the steamer Silver Spray for Goderich, went home after one month. 1962 May, v4, #2 "The mail bag": Mrs. John A. Cuyler of Toronto doing Lapp family history. British researcher seeks postmarks of county towns with names from the U.K. 1964 June., v6, #1 "The sparrow arrives": Sparrow brought from England, 1850s. Between Wiarton and Whicher's Point is a rock with a woman's face, said to be where a bride died after dishonouring her tribe. 1963 Sept., v5, #3 "Walkerton's first automobile": by John Korman. Earliest settlers at the meeting came in 1849. One is Adam Clement; "beds and beer" inn; shanty at Maple Hill, Walkerton. C.R. Barker of Kincardine came in 1849 to Durham; land agent George Jackson advised to go by way of Owen Sound; walk to Southampton and Penetangore River. 1961 May, v3, #5 "A meeting of Bruce pioneers", pt. 3:From Bruce Herald, Walkerton, Oct. 14, 1881. Brant township organized, pathmasters appointed. High Todd's experience bush farming in Brant in 1849. William Gunn crossed from Owen Sound to Southampton in 1852 with an Indian guide carrying the mail. He stayed with land agent McNabb who related that three parties had come down the Saugeen on a raft, on a sporting expedition; Mr. Hill lost his foot in a shooting accident. Gunn settled at Inverhuron in 1853. 1961 October, v4, #1 "A meeting of Bruce pioneers", pt. 4: From Bruce Herald, Walkerton, Oct. 14, 1881. Gunn family house at Inverhuron was finished in July 1853. He was school superintendent and reeve of Bruce Township, helped feed the people during the famine year. Wind storm April 19, 1927 demolished Chesley buildings, east wing of Krug Bros. furniture factory. Thomas Patterson barn on Con. 1 was rebuilt by the neighbours. 1963 Sept., v5, #3 "Provincial bill wipes out two Bruce villages": Ross Whicher's private bill removes the registered plan of Port Bruce and Malta, after 108 years. They were destroyed by fire July 4, 1862. 1963 April, v5, #2 "Saugeen explorer on Canadian stamp": From the Paisley Advocate.
