This folder consists of 18 letters written by Albert Leeder and his family to his sister, Hannah Leeder and his father, Nathaniel Leeder Sr., both in Port Elgin. Most letter are written by Albert, but also included are three letters written to Hannah from Albert's wife, Margaret, and son, Bertie, in Toronto. Alberta writes from Detroit, Michigan while working in Windsor on an iron ferry in 1884; from Victoria, British Columbia in 1885; from Yale, British Columbia in 1887 (including a letter written on Canadian Pacific Railway Company paper); from Barnesville, Minnesota in 1887; from Woodstock, Ontario in 1889; from Collingwood, Ontario in 1905; from Buffalo, New York in 1907 and 1910 while working for Lackawanna Railroad shops; and from Toronto, Ontario in 1915 and 1917. Letters mention work and job prospects in the railway and mining industries; living arrangements; accounts of the places Albert writes from and has travelled to, such as Missouri to visit family; family news; harvesting; and the exchange of goods and gifts like books, quartz, eggs, and a Christmas box. A letter from May 7th, 1905 notes Robert Leeder Jr.'s plans to move to Cuba the next fall. A letter from April 4, 1910 then notes Nathaniel Leeder Sr.'s potential plans to visit his son Robert in Cuba. A letter from March 6, 1917 then mentions Nathaniel Sr. and his wife being ill in Cuba. A letter from May 22, 1915 mentions the birth of a daughter to Albert and Margaret. This folder also contains envelopes accompanying some of the letters. These are addressed to Hannah or Robert in Port Elgin. One letter and envelope is addressed to Hannah in Walkerton. |
