Description |
Account book for an unknown business or store in Lucknow. Page/section headings state the customer's name and often their place of residence (village or township and lot/concession) or occupation. Each page/section contains a record of the customer's purchases and payments. Entries consist of the date, a description ("Goods", "Balance", "Wages", "Cash", "Note", etc.), and amount. For years which overlap with the volumes described in AX2020.037.001-.010, purchases in the ledgers correspond with the amounts recorded in the account book for the same date. Various notes and scrap papers are found between pages, including notes related to transactions which appear to be from the original creators/customers as well as notes on the contents of the volume which appear to have been made by researchers in later years (ca. 1970). One note is addressed to Messrs MacMaster and Company and appears to be written to the business owners regarding an invoice. Also included is a "Specimen of penmanship" from Northern Business College, Owen Sound; an "Abstract of auditor's report" 1886-1887; and a subscription form for the "Presbyterian Review".. A sampling of customer names are given below and included in the Authority File Field for People: - William Henderson [Kinloss]; - Murdoch MacKay [Huron]; - James Nicholl [Teacher S.S. No. 11 Huron]; - Angus Beaten [Ashfield]; - William Orr [Lucknow]; - Donald MacDonald [Tailor, Kinloss]; - Widow Robert Herrington; - Duncan Cameron [Tailor, Lucknow]; - John MacDonald [Glencoe] [Date Note: Most entries are dated 1870-1873 however a small number of accounts have entries as late as 1889] |
