Research notes, photographs, newspaper clippings and announcements related to Bruce Township, Concession 1. Contents include: - "Assessment Roll for the Township of Bruce 1855 Conc. 1", which lists the name of the owner, the lot identifier, the number of cultivated acres, the number of uncultivated acres and the number of residents (census). - an article by Hilda Downey in her column "Ae' Glint on Ither Days", published in the November 22, 1967 Kincardine News, which lists 1867 and 1967 owners of lots on Concession 1, Bruce Township. - "Lot D, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which discusses the history, ownership and Crown Deed holders of this lot from 1863 to 1934. A letter from a descendent discusses the family of John Henry Thorrington and Samuel Palmer Chapman who lived there in 1863. A photocopy of a picture of Mrs. Dugald MacKenzie is included. The MacKenzie family owned this lot from 1874 to 1934. - "Lot F, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1876 to 1926, and includes a summary on John Urquhart (who held the crown deed to this lot in 1876 and was a mail carrier). Photocopies of pictures of Mrs. and Mrs. Robert McIntosh are included. Thomas J. McIntosh owned the lot in 1926. - "Lot H, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which discusses the history, ownership and Crown Deed holders of this lot from 1866 to 1939 including: 1) Donald McLellan, who held the crown deed in 1866 and represented Bruce Township on County Council for 18 years. He was reeve for 1860-62, 1866-68, 1876 and deputy reeve in 1873 and 1875. A black and white drawng of Donald McLellan is included. 2) Peter S. McLaren (owner 1884), who built the docks in Kincardine, Inverhuron and Southampton. 3) Jessie Bowie (owner 1907) who owned the farm when a cyclone hit, bringing down the barn and killing Hugh J. McArthur and Bill [William Henry] Ferris. 4) the Hugh Smith family (owner 1939) - "Lot 1, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1872 to 1951. A newspaper clipping of a drawing, which appeared in The Illustrated London News in 1860, showing a visiting Prince of Wales (later Edward VII) and his party descending Ottawa's famous timber slide used by raftsmen to circumnavigate the Chaudiere Falls, is included with "Lot 1, Conc. 1, Bruce" handwritten below [relationship to this lot is unknown]. - "Lot 2, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1864 to 1951 and includes a photocopy of a photograph of Mr. and Mrs. Dan McLaren (owners 1911-1944) - "Lot 3, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1861 to 1925. A newspaper clipping from the Kincardine News, August 15, 1973, describes the 90th birthday celebration of Mrs. Walter Todd (owners 1925). Another newspaper clipping (source not identified) dated October 3, 1990 describes the 50th anniversary celebration of Murray and Clara Todd. - "Lot 4, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1869 to 1927. Photocopied images of Janey and Dan McIntosh and a barn (dated 1956) are included. - "Lot 5, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1858 to 1928. The obituary for William Danskine (owner 1886-1904) is included. - "Lot 7, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies Crown Deed holders from 1867 to 1938. Crown Deed owners of Lots 6 & 7 from 1876 to 1938 are also identified. This collection includes: 1) photocopies of pictures of William Begg (owner 1902) , Mr. and Mrs. Robert Begg (owner 1938), and Jack Begg and his wife Vera Foster are included. 2) a newspaper clipping, dated October 21, 1961, from an unidentified source, titled "Pioneer Leader in 4-H Club Work, Bert Begg Feted by 200 Friends). 3) Photocopies of photographs of Wm. Begg & family, and Bert Begg. 4) another newspaper clipping, dated October 21, 1961, from an unidentified source, titled "Tiverton 4-H Leader Honored For 20 Years Work with the Club". 5) "Threshing Troubles in 1903", two stories found in the October 29, 1903 Tiverton Watchman newspaper, which describes two incidents related to farming. - "Lot 9, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp." which includes the Crown Deed holders from 1874 to 1949 and the following two newspaper clippings: 1) "Hazel McKenzie spends 90th birthday with family", dated March 29, 1991. Alex McKenzie was the owner of this lot 1938-1949. 2) "Loney will try again for Tories", dated December, 1972, which discusses John Loney's candidacy in the Federal election. - "Lot 10, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1868 to 1946. A photograph of John, Hazel, Maimie and Frank McFadyen is included. On the bottom right corner of the page, is written "Lot 10, Conc. 12, Kincardine". Mary A.C. MacFadyen is listed as owning the Crown Deed of Lot 10, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp. from 1928 to 1946. Maimie McFadyen is possibly Mary MacFadyen. - "Lot 12, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1874 to 1958. During this time, the Lot was owned by various members of the MacKinnon family. A newspaper clipping (undated and unsourced) noting the university graduation of Douglas Neil MacKinnon is included. - "Lot 14, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1917 to 1924. - "Lot 15, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1879 to 1946. In September, 1946, the Crown Deed was held by School Section Trustees. A photocopy of an image showing a teacher and students in front of the school (Bruce-Kincardine U.S.S. No. 3 (Eskdale)) is included. This image is catalogued separately as A2022.014.077. An undated and unsourced newspaper clipping shows the image of Mr. and Mrs. [Irene] Stuart Bradley and announces their 55th wedding anniversary. Another newspaper clipping, dated 1989, shows the image of Donald M. Bradley and announces his graduation from Radio College of Canada. Henry Stewart Bradley was the Crown Deed holder of this lot in 1946. - "Lot 16, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1862 to 1917. A death announcement for Ann Rauling, wife of George Liddicoat, is included. This lot was identified as her residence at the time. - "Lot 18, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1910 to 1957 and discusses the history of this lot in 1854. A brief history of the McPherson [MacPherson} family is included. - "Lot 19, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1915 to 1919 and discusses the history of this lot in 1853. Eskadale [Eskdale] Post Office was on this property. A brief history of the McFadyen (owners 1915-1919) and Samuel Bonnett (owner 1919) families is included. - "Lot 20, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1882 to 1917. A brief history of the McKenzie (owners 1887-1896) and Reid (owners 1899-1917) families is included. The following items are included: 1) a photograph of John Reid and Bernice Binks dated December 23, 1944 2) a photograph of the family of Charlotte Reid and Gordon Wilson (Charlotte, Lloyd, John, Marilyn, Gordon and June) 3) a photograph of the family of Shirley Reid and Robert (Bob) Woodason (Bob, Alex, Heather, Margaret, Raymond, Shirley, Janice, and Robert W.) 4) a newspaper clipping dated December 1978 showing Ray Woodason receiving a 4H trophy. 5) a wedding invitation for Robert Reid Woodason and Janice Ellen Elder dated June 22, 1985. 6) an undated newspaper clipping announcing the graduations of Marg (Margaret) Woodason and Roy [Ray] Woodason - "Lot 21, Conc. 1, Bruce", which contains: 1) a photocopy of a picture of Mr. & Mrs. Robert Tout. 2) a photograph of Mary and Katie McFadyen. 3) a newspaper clipping showing the picture of Sean E. Tout, son of Eric and Marion Tout, who graduated from Conestogo College Law and Security in 1990. In handwriting, at the bottom is "Marion Bonnett". 4) the wedding invitation for Carol Ann McPherson and John Wilton Maus, July 10, 1982. - "Lot 22, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which lists the Crown Deed holder in 1872. A Kincardine Independent newspaper clipping, dated April 12, 1989, shows a picture of Elizabeth McFadyen and an article about her 90th birthday celebration. - "Lot 23, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1907 to 1951. A photograph showing a group of people in the process of building a barn, captioned "Bruce, Tp., Lot 23, Conc 1. Barn raising, c. 1910. Accession No. 2538" is included. - "Lot 27, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which lists the Crown Deed holders from 1875 to 1918. Photocopied images of a woman and a man, both with the handwritten caption "Armour" are included. Arch. Armour was the deed holder in 1886 and James Armour in 1915. - "Lot 30, Conc. 1, Bruce Tp.", which identifies the Crown Deed holders from 1874 to 1938. A photocopy of a picture of a couple identified as Angus MacDonald and wife Effie Cameron is included. Malcolm MacDonald was the owner from 1874 to 1883. |
