Video recording documenting an interview with Beatrice Scott, Jean Scott, Marilyn Scott, and Alan Scott. 00:15- Interview taking place in the Dunblane Church. The Scott family were early pioneers. 01:40- Scott family has Scottish Origin, in the Scottish Lowlands known as the Borders. The Scott Clan would fight the English and their neighbouring Clans. 02:45- Walter Scott left Scotland in 1820 and settled in eastern Ontario near Perth, His Brother John stayed in Scotland and raised six children, who came to Ontario. 03:35- According to the 1841 Census, the first Census taken in Great Britain, John Scott was an agricultural labourer 05:15- According to the 1851 Census, John Scott was the keeper of Melrose Abbey in Melrose Scotland. John Scott's children had begun to leave for Canada at this point in time. 07:21- It is assumed that the Scott's travelled to Canada on a small sailing ship and left from Greenoch, Glasgow, then to Quebec City, and on to Bruce County. 07:58- The Scott Family brought tools, percussion cap guns, wooden curling stones, clothing chests and more when the immigrated to Bruce County. 09:31- John Scott Jr. immigrated to Canada from Jamaica and graduated as a Presbyterian Minister from Knox College and spent twenty-five years as minister in London and retired to Bruce County where he spent nine years as minister at North Bruce & Queen Hill. 09:51- William Scott (son of John Scott Sr.) spent life in Saugeen but went back to Scotland in 1871 to bring pure bred short horn cattle back to Saugeen. 11:48- Dunblane Church and the Scott family homestead are located beside the Saugeen River on River Road. 12:35- William was the first to bring pure bred short horn cattle to the Saugeen area. 14:22- The Dunblane Church was built on the corner of William's lot. The community assisted with building of the Church and Peter Scott constructed the pews. Regular services ceased in 1968 and continued once per year. 17:00- Robert Scott's son John maintained the short horn cattle herd that William had begun. The farming was mixed farming, and a lot of time was spent preparing and showing cattle at fairs. He was a short horn cattle breeder. John Scott was treasurer and elder of Dunblane Church, he was on the school board, Director of Agricultural Society, and he was assessor of Saugeen Township. 18:14- After World War One, John Scott was inspector of agricultural development loan board. He would inspect farms in Saugeen. John Scott died in June 1945. 19:30- Travel was by cutter in winter, oil lamps were used, and horses used to do farm work. Neighbour's were vital part of early Saugeen life. 20:07- Scott family children went to Dunblane School. 21:38- Scott family children also went to Sunday School at Dunblane Church. The church was heated by woodstove. Some families would arrive at church via boat up the Saugeen River. 23:24- The Scott family would show the short horn cattle in Port Elgin and Paisley fairs and would have to walk them by foot to and from the fair. 25:17- All of the Scott children attended high school in Port Elgin. After high school they stayed at home for number of years because it was the Depression years so they partook in home keeping. They were apart of Junior Institute and Junior Farmer's meeting committees. The girls would learn tasks of home economics and the boys would partake in hose judging competitions. 26:38- Farm Forum Association had meetings in the Saugeen area. They would discuss farm topics and have social time and refreshments afterward. 28:05- Fraser Scott was a teacher for several years in Toronto and retired as vice principal. Fraser built a cottage on Lake Huron in the 1940s, which was sold in the 1990s. 29:30- Normal School or also known as teacher's school was in Stratford. Fraser and Beatrice Scott attended this school before starting their teaching careers. 30:31- Beatrice took one year training in Missionary Deaconess training and went on a mission trip to India during World War Two. They travelled to India by cargo ship to Bombay via the Pacific Ocean in early 1940s. She worked in Northern and Central India with tribal communities. Beatrice taught classes in a church building to students from grades one to eight. Beatrice taught English and religion classes to older students. 34:50- After independence of India, it was illegal to teach religion in schools, so they taught bible school before school started in the morning. 35:02- Beatrice was supervisor and principal of village schools, but then eventually appointed Indian villagers as supervisors so she worked on a consultant basis on her last mission. 35:30- There was a medical hospital, dispensary, economic development, and evangelism administered by missionary council and local church. 39:28- Jean's interest was in home economics so she enrolled in McDonald's Institute in Guelph in 1931. In fall 1939, Jean joined the staff of the Home Economics branch at the Ontario Department of Agriculture and was to work in nine counties from Toronto to Kingston. She conducted and organized the 4H Home Making Program for girls twelve to twenty-six years of age. Purpose was to develop skills in home making, work in group, speak in public, and develop leadership skills. 41:38- Home making clubs would focus on food and nutrition, gardening, clothing, and home furnishings. 42:17- Jean was transferred to Western Ontario and settled in Perth County and she was helping new home economists. She held an office at the University of Guelph and dispatched from there. 43:10- Jean became Supervisor with Home Economics Branch of Ontario and so she moved to Toronto where she lived and worked until 1974. She would attend national 4H meetings. 44:12- Marilyn Scott is daughter of Robert Alexander Scott, who was son of John and Mary of Scott, and was older brother of Jean and Beatrice Scott. 44:56- When Robert Scott graduated from high school, he worked at the Scott homestead and showed and judged livestock in local fairs. Robert married Elizabeth Upshall. Prior to their marriage, Elizabeth attended normal school in Stratford to become a teacher and was assigned a position in Northern Ontario. She stopped teaching following their marriage. 47:55- In 1928, Robert and Elizabeth won the Bruce County Competition of the Junior Institute and Junior Farmer Debating League, arguing that old age pensions should be supplied in Canada. 51:23- Scottish tradition was important to the family. 54:00- Farming was mixed, they continued short horn tradition, had milk cows, hens, pigs, and eventually started into diary cows. Robert had a contract with Port Elgin Dairy. In mid 1950s they expanded with a milking barn, and by 1960s had nice herd of Holstein and Jersey cows. Had grain crops of oats and barley, as well as corn grown for sileage, and hay fields. 56:05- They performed market gardening: potato patch, strawberries, raspberries, and more sold to local grocery stores. 56:58- In winter months, they would cut and split trees from forest to burn at homestead. 57:34- Tractors, bailers, and combines were introduced on the farm in the 1951s, as well as milking machines. 1:01:31- Robert and Elizabeth were exhibitors at local fairs and service on the board of the Port Elgin Fair. 1:03:25- Elizabeth was involved in Women's Institute. Robert was on Saugeen Planning Board and then became Treasurer for the Committee of Adjustments. He was an expert in municipal planning and was a member of the Saugeen Memorial Hospital board. 1:08:45- Marilyn and Allen Scott discuss their educational and career paths. They each had long teaching careers in the Toronto area. |
