This is part of series 4, file 2 (Education - Reports and documents concerning development of education of First Nations people). This transcript indicates that the "Minutes" are "from notes taken in shorthand and otherwise by Henry Baldwin of Peterborough, Barrister at Law, Secretary to the Chiefs in Council." The donor, Dr. Peter S. Schmalz, has noted this, in his original inventory, as "very important document." Individuals present at the meeting included Captain T.G. Anderson, Visiting Superintendent Indian Affairs, the Rev. Mr. Peter Jones of Port Credit, along with reverends from Orillia, Alderville, Alnwick, Rama. Chippewas present included Chief Joseph Sawyer, Mr. James Young and Mr. William Young all from Credit River, and Chief Waubutic from Owen Sound (none present from Saugeen). These Minutes include the government proposals including: abandonment of smaller villages and formation of large settlements; establishment of Manual Labour Schools for the education of Indian children, giving 1/4 of annuities to support the children while remaining at the schools; Indians to give up hunting practices and abandon roving habits. Minutes include responses by reverends and First Nations representatives. 2nd copy has reference "Canadian Gazette Office, Montral, 1846, 1-34 and was assigned document #276. |
