Video recording documenting an interview with Saugeen Township politicians and employees. 00:42- On January 1, 1999, after 145 years of local government, the Township of Saugeen will amalgamate with Southampton and Port Elgin to form new municipality called the Town of Saugeen Shores. 01:45- Discussing historical plaques and honour rolls honouring staff who fought in wars throughout 1900s. 02:25- Interview with the Treasurer of the Town of Saugeen. 03:30- Comparison of 1854 Census to the 1998 Census. In 1854 population of 652, in 1998, the population was 1759- not including seasonal residents. In 1854 the acreage was 46,434 acres and in 1998 38,765. Also discussing the market value assessment of Saugeen in 1854 vs. 1998 and the amount of tax collected by the Town and the breakdown of where these taxes were applied. 06:39- Interview with Clerical Assistant. Discussing the various roles and responsibilities they perform. 08:53- Interview with Linda White, Clerk for the Township of Saugeen. Discussing educational background as well as various tasks and responsibilities, especially in respect to their involvement with Council. 10:07- Discussing the original survey and map of Township of Saugeen in 1851. Lake Range Lots were surveyed in an East-West direction and the lots between lake range and Saugeen River were surveyed in North-South direction. The lots of the Saugeen Road were surveyed in the East-West Direction. 11:44- In 1854 Southampton was incorporated into the Township of Saugeen. Continued discussion of survey and maps. Discussing 1998 map of Township and notes that Southampton and Port Elgin are separate from Township of Saugeen. 13:26- New map was implemented with introduction of 911 system. 13:53- Farmland surveys in 1851 became open for purchase in 1852. 14:50- Discussing and looking at original minute book from 1854 Council meetings. The first Council meeting was held on January 16, 1854. 16:35- Demonstrating the official Corporate Seal and its use, which was purchased in 1905. It is used on all legal papers that need attested to by the Township of Saugeen. 18:00- Discussion of various roles and the staff who performed these in both the 1850s and in 1998. 19:53- Discussion of historical by-laws passed in early days of the Township. 21:12- In 1998 the historical records were held in the vault of the Township office and Bruce County Museum. 21:30- Discussing the 1876 Township assessment book and the information collected at that time. 23:49- Interview with Jim Clazie, Roads Crew. Discussing his family history as the Clazie Family came to Concession 4 Lot 11 in the 1870s. Jim Clazie was a Township building inspector and sat on Council. His grandfather was Reeve and assessor of the Township. 25:40- Jim Clazie discusses Road Crew Responsibilities in Township of Saugeen. 29:49- Continued discussion of Road Crew Responsibilities and views on the upcoming amalgamation. 31:20- Interview with Tom and Ron Thede, discussing history of Thede family. Tom is an operator mechanic and Ron is a grater operator. Discussing their various tasks. 37:07- Interview with Carl Seeley, Public Works Manager. Carl discusses his responsibilities, especially relating to roads services and the operation of the Township, as well as budgeting and Council reports. Carl also discusses the Township's equipment fleet, as well as the land overseen by the Township, which totals 162km. Maintenance of streetlights and cemeteries, as well as water meter infrastructure. Discusses the different responsibilities of the Public Works Department. 41:50- Carl discusses major projects undertaken by Public Works Department 44:16- Carl provides information on various bridges throughout the Township of Saugeen. 45:46- Aerial photograph of the Township of Saugeen's municipal offices in late 1980s. 46:19- Tour of structures on the Municipal office site, providing information on the structure's uses and the equipment within them. 49:35- Information provided on the Township of Saugeen Fire Department. 50:01- Information provided on the antique grater in front of municipal office. 50:30- Discussion of various donated items within the municipal office. 51:30- Tour of Council Chamber. 51:59- Council meeting is called to order. Introduction to Council members. 53:09- Footage from Council meeting. 55:07- John from Beacher's Association addresses Council. 57:21- Interview with William Motley, Councillor. 1:05:08- Interview with Don Fenton, Deputy Reeve. Discussion of duties of Deputy Reeve. Don discusses the family history of the Fenton family. 1:10:04- Don discusses his initial interest in local government and municipal business. 1:11:30- Don discusses the various recreational activities and facilities available to residents of the Township of Saugeen. 1:14:34- Don discusses his involvement with the restructuring committee and the restructuring process in preparation for the Township restructuring to be one Township of Saugeen, Port Elgin, and Southampton. Also discusses input on benefits of amalgamation and how efficiencies should occur throughout various departments. 1:17:50- Interview with Mike Smith, Township of Saugeen Councilor. 1:22:26- Mike Smith discusses his memorable moments as a Councilor, with one being the division of Bruce County into 8 municipalities. 1:24:26- Interview with Christine Coulter-Whittiker, Township of Saugeen Councilor. 1:33:57- Discussion of history cairn erected by Saugeen History Hunters. |
