Description |
A letter written to "Jean", from "Howard" (Sgt. H. Nuttall; Headquarters Squadron). The letter is dated July 12, 1944. It was intended to thank "all the ladies" for the parcel they sent. This letter is part of a group of letters sent by local (Bruce Township) soldiers overseas who received "care packages" from the Euchre / Crokinole Club of Bruce Township, Bruce County, Ontario. Letter .011 in this collection notes that Mrs. Wilmer (Jean) Ribey was the president of the club at this time. LETTER TRANSCRIPTION: A44570 Sgt. H Nuttall Headquarter's Squadron 2nd Cdn Arm'd [Ba--] B.W.E.F C.A. o/s July 12 44 Dear Jean - I don't think I have written you to thank you for the parcel you ladies sent so here goes. It came over fine Jean & you have no idea how we enjoyed eating it - we have been living on stew & hard biscuits since we left England so it was quite a treat believe me. I always love to share my boxes with my tank crew & it was the first some of them had eaten maple syrup. It is a very nice day over here & at present we are having a well-earned rest. Well Jean what do you all think of your Canadian army?, something for you all at home to be mighty proud of I would say, although things will be causing plenty of grief & tears there now, but lets hope the worst is over - I figure so far I have just been lucky, at times it looked tough. I will have to cut this short Jean so remember me to all those ladies & hoping soon to see you all again. Best to all Howard |
Provenance |
The envelope these letters were gathered in had originally been addressed to Donald D. Ribey. Many of the letters are written to Mrs. [Wilmer] Ribey, or Jean Ribey (Donald's mother). The envelope has various hand-written notes on it including: "Euchre club. Letter from [---] Girl"; "Tweedsmuir History Material" [one would assume they were handed in by the Ribey family. to the local Women's Institute Tweedsmuir representative [possibly Grace Elizabeth (Betty) McCulloch, whose family is now donating them to us]; "War 1939+ Letters from soldiers. Euchre & crokinole club" |
