Admin/Biographical History |
The Sauble Cross Country Ski Club began in 1982 with approximately 15 members. The trails were mapped and marked by Dean Elliot, Vince Aruso, and Bert Knechtel. In the beginning, the club serviced 25 kilometers of groomed trails, but later downsized to 18 kilometers due to some swampy areas. The first meetings were held in the fire hall and monthly membership meetings held in members' homes. In October 1982, a camper served as the club's chalet and ticket booth until a permanent structure was built in 1985. In 1983, memberships and day use fees were introduced, and the club had approximately 50 members. The Sauble Cross Country Ski Club was later incorporated on May 23, 1986. In 1991, the chalet was expanded and in 1994 and 1996 new ski trails were cut. By 2000 there were 146 memberships purchased and by 2008, general meetings were held at the Sauble Community Centre. Snowshoe trails were officially opened in 2010 during a ceremony during Sauble Beach Winterfest. The following seasons saw the addition of four more snowshoe trails. During the height of the Covid-19 Pandemic in the 2020-2021 season, there were 301 memberships purchased which was double from the previous year. In 2022, the club celebrated its 40th anniversary, and changed their name to the Sauble Beach Ski and Snowshoe Club. Throughout the years the club hosted and participated in various annual community events including road cleanups, volunteer appreciation barbeques, Sauble Winterfest, garage sales, parades, open houses, and group ski events.
