Admin/Biographical History |
The Circle Arts story began in 1969 when Gale E. Jensen, a professor of Social Sciences at University of Michigan, who began purchasing a summer home and other buildings in the area around 1964, persuaded six students of the Ontario College of Art (OCA) to create an art gallery in the Belrose Store, a building he owned at 14 Bay Street, Tobermory. The business was named Circle Arts by the six founders: Allen Smutylo, Susan Sparks, Wayne Brown, Peter Oliver, Mary Henry and Martin Kimble. The group stayed in the village for the summer, producing oil paintings, watercolours, wood block prints, sculptures, silk screens, textiles, jewelry and pottery. At the end of the summer, they returned to Toronto to finish their studies, moving back to Tobermory permanently the following spring. Although the group eventually dispersed, Allen Smutylo continued to exhibit his artwork at Circle Arts throughout the business' operational years. The works he exhibited and sold there portrayed the spirit and character of the people and the harsh beauty of the land and water around St. Edmunds Township and the Peninsula. Ben Goedhart was hired as the manager in 1980 and, when Allen Smutylo and Susan Sparks moved away in fall 1982, Goedhart took over the business, running and owning Circle Arts from 1982 until he retired in January 2006. It was then sold to Glenda Burrell, Arlene Kennedy and Simon White, who share a passion for the unique nature of the Bruce Peninsula. Glenda Burrell is a former drama teacher and arts department head. Arlene Kennedy was the Director of the McIntosh Gallery at The University of Western Ontario from 1989 to 2008. Simon White is a web designer and a former theatre set designer and production manager. In 2002, Circle Arts celebrated their 33rd anniversary at the annual grand opening. Four of the founding artists were there - Allen Smutylo, Peter Oliver, Wayne Brown and Martin Kimble. In 2009, Circle Arts celebrated 40 years of business and was also nominated for Top Retailer Award by Niche Magazine. This award celebrates excellence and innovation in Arnerican and Canadian fine craft. Over thirty different artists have exhibited works for sale at Circle Arts. |
