Description |
Referred to as a "book" by the donor, these documents (now consisting of 13 folders) are part of series 2, file 1 (Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation related documents - Saugeen Nawash claims). The "book" consists of 13 folders containing documents dated chronologically from 1740 to 1838, copied from microfilm and resources held at the National Archives of Canada (now Library and Archives Canada), including material chiefly from NAC's reference number RG 10, including parts of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development fonds. The documents include: a. "Response of M. de Beauhamois to the Pottawatomies of the River St. Joseph" (with transcription); b. "Simcoe Papers 1792-1793"; c. "Speech of Nayash 1814, Ottawa Chief"; d. Anderson Report 1822; e. Correspondence concerning Pottawatomie claim, 1824 f. Treaty No. 29, 1827; g. "Memorandum respecting Indians Present / Anderson", 1829; excerpt from transcribed "Life and Journals of Kah-ke-wa-quo-na-by (Rev. Peter Jones), Wesleyan Missionary, Toronto, 1829. h. "Statements of presents issued to Indians at Penetanguishene, including those of Lake Simcoe Machedash" 1830 i. 1831 - correspondence to Governor General of Upper Canada from Alexander Chief; "List of Native Couriers from the Original Personnel list of 1817-1856 at the Establishments" with note "early references to Saugeens"; "Cadotte and Lamorandiere surnames from St. Ann's Penetang registers"; "Return of Indians visiting post for presents August 1831, Penetang"; "List of Indians to whom the within mentioned presents were issued, 1831" j. 1833 - "Statements of fees and disbursements in removing the undermentioned dependants from the Indian lands in the County of Brant"; Excerpts from Rev. Peter Jones Life and Journals; Correspondence to Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada dated Sahgeeng, 1833 from William Bill, Alexander Chief, George Wamatickooyehe, James Kahwetahosn, Seth Kapawetungik, Solomon Wahpagose and James Modwaash;" correspondence from Indian Affairs Superintendant Anderson; k. 1834 - correspondence l. 1835 - correspondence including letter from Rev. Peter Jones re: property belonging to Saugeen First Nations people and Chief Wawanosh. m. 1838 - correspondence. Post-it notes handwritten by Dr. Peter S. Schmalz concerning the contents of the documents are placed on some of the documents. |

At the time this material was created and compiled by the donor, the department of the Government of Canada responsible for Canada's northern lands and territories was called "Department of Indian Affairs" (sometimes shortened to "Indian Affairs"). This entity was changed and renamed several times between 1966 and 2019 (in 2011, 2015, and 2017). On July 15, 2019, legislation came into effect dissolving "Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada" and establishing 2 new departments, "Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs [Canada]" (CIRNAC) and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC).
