Coronation Rebekah Lodge began in 1937 as a sister lodge of the Odd Fellows. The mandate of the Lodge was to support the widows and orphans, and all those in distress. Originally, the Lodge also served as a social outing for the local women, as there were few social occasions available in those early days. The lodge members met twice each month and detailed minutes and attendance records were kept. New members were obtained through current membership asking other women chosen to be members, who were then required to be approved by all members. The Teeswater Lodge opened the Ex-Toggery in 1972, long before used clothing stores became common. Through the ex-toggery, and other fundraising efforts, the funds were donated to the Wingham Hospital the Cancer Society, the Red Cross and to many home fire victims, to name only a few. For special meetings, Lodge members dressed for the occasion, as seen in the photographs that are part of the fonds. The Teeswater Lodge disbanded in the early 2000s as the membership continued to decline due to many other interests available to young modern women. The Teeswater Lodge was the last to close in its District (Rebekah Kincardine District No. 24). |
