Description |
This folder consists of seventeen letters, to Hannah Leeder, as well as Nathaniel E. Leeder Sr. and Mary Caroline Leeder (Schwendker) in Port Elgin. Letters include: - One letter sent to Nathaniel and Mary Caroline from their son [Edw.] Leeder in Alsop, Dakota on July 14, 1881. He writes about working on the railroad and impressions of Alsop, Duluth, Fargo, and Wadena. - Six letters sent to Nathaniel and Mary Caroline from Robert in Chicago (1896, 1901, 1904), Illinois and Havana and Itabo, Cuba (1905-1906). - Ten letters sent to Hannah from Robert and Madge in Owen Sound (1881), Chicago (1894-1895, 1904-1905), and Cuba (undated). Robert and Madge write about Owen Sound boat schedules, his Chicago print shop and its eventual selling in 1904, weather, pets, potential family visits to Chicago and Cuba, family health and news, immigration and employment, politics and current events, Hannah's marital status, their son Marsden and his growth and adoption, parenting, Robert's election as Chairman of the General Committee of the lodge (Royal Arch and Eastern Star Chapters), and details of their move to and business endeavours and life in Cuba. The first mention of Robert and Madge's plans to move to Cuba is in an October 15, 1899 letter from Robert to his parents. He mentions he has bought 20 acres, wants to grow oranges, lemons, etc., and the company he is buying from has 50,000 acres and already has over 100 men down there already laying out the land and building. A subsequent December 20, 1901 letter indicates Robert is not in Cuba yet as he is now an agent for the company for the buying, selling and improvement of Cuban land. In a November 16, 1904 letter, Robert details his first trip to Cuba, including travel costs and how he bought more land while there. Robert and his family migrated to Cuba in 1905, as indicated in a October 31, 1905 letter to his parents. Envelopes are included with some letters. |
