Admin/Biographical History |
In 1941, the Canadian Broadcast Corporation's farm department, the Canadian Association for Adult Education, and the Dominion of Agriculture launched a new CBC radio broadcast called the National Farm Radio Forum. The program covered relevant topics and concerns to farmers and originally aired on Monday nights from 8:30-9:30pm. On January 13, 1943, a meeting was held in the Teeswater town hall to discuss the creation of a South Bruce Farm Radio Forum, and by October 1943, the Farm Radio Forum in South Bruce was established with secretaries appointed by school section. Inaugural secretaries included Wesley Goble, Donald Ireland, Wm. Keith, Allan McLean, Wilbur McKague, Russell Ireland, Duncan Keith, R.M. Aitken, Albert Walters, Walter Sharpe, Joseph Wall, Morris Cronin, Warner Smyth, and Alphonse Zimmer. Nelson Ribey was the county President of the Culross Federation of Agriculture at the time. Forums would meet in member's homes every Monday night to listen to the national broadcast. Forum study materials would be sent out from the Provincial Secretary's office in Ottawa to secretaries a week in advance, which would then be distributed to Forum members. After the broadcast each Forum would lead a discussion and report on the content. These reports generally included comments on the broadcast, questions discussed, and overall remarks and requests for other discussion topics. They would then be sent to the Toronto office for review. In 1956-57, the Farm Forum was broadcast in a six-episode television series on CKNX-TV. Though never becoming a national program, the Do-Cum-In Farm Forum participated in one of these live shows. The National Farm Forum eventually ended its broadcast after twenty-five years. Forums pushed for policy change with the Federation of Agriculture and other organizations, and were also influential leaders in the formation of co-ops including the Teeswater Co-op, credit unions, and medical and crop insurance. In 1994 the Do-Cum-In Farm Forum was the only remaining Forum in Canada and went on to celebrate its 50th anniversary. As of 2005, the Forum still met with Mary O'Malley as the only chartered member.
