This fonds consists of administrative records, including minutes and treasurer's books (1987-1998), as well as newspaper clipping scrapbooks and photographs reflecting the members, activities, events, conventions and dances organized or particpated in by the Lighthouse Squares square dancing club of Southampton, Ontario, originally known as the Town and Country Swingers Square Dance Club of Port Elgin, Ontario. |

The Lighthouse Squares square dance club was originally known as Town and Country Swingers Square Dance Club of Port Elgin from 1962-1979. It was organized by Don & Lorraine Gidden and George & Gretchen Littlehale. They originally met at the Port Elgin Community Centre on Monday evenings. In 1976, the Town and Country Swingers changed their venue from Port Elgin to the Town Hall in Southampton, Ontario. In or around 1979, a contest was held to create a new name and banner for the club. The winning entry was designed and submitted by Cecille Lockrey. The club was known as "Lighthouse Squares" from that point on. Members participated in parades, conventions, dances and parties. In 1983, the then 32-member club hosted a Jamboree attended by dancers from across North America. The club provided square dancing classes for new members. The club also made donations to community charities. The group disbanded in or around 200-. |

The records from accession 2005.052 were held by club member Mrs. Dorothy Wilkie until 2005 when she donated them to the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre. The records from accession A2013.021 were originally housed at the Presbyterian Church, Southampton where the club met. The club disbanded and the records were passed to the Bruce County Museum & Archives in 2013. |
