MUNICIPALITY OF ARRAN-ELDERSLIE The Municipality of Arran-Elderslie was created in 1999, by amalgamating the Township of Arran, Township of Elderslie, Town of Chesley, Village of Paisley, and Village of Tara. The Municipality includes the communities of Allenford, Arkwright, Arranvale, Burgoyne, Chesley, Dobbinton, Dreamland, Dunblane, Ellengowan, Elsinore, Gillies Hill, Invermay, Kelly's Corners, Lockerby, Mount Hope, Paisley, Salem, Salisbury, Tara, Vesta and Williscroft. ARRAN TOWNSHIP: The survey of Arran Township was completed in 1851, after the first settler(s) arrived around 1850. Lands opened for official occupation in July 1852. In 1853, when the United Townships of the County of Bruce was dissolved, Arran Township became the senior township in the municipality of the United Townships of Arran and Elderslie. Two years later, that union dissolved and Arran Township existed as an independent municipality in 1856. In 1857, Amabel Township, to the north, united with Arran Township. In 1858, Albemarle Township also joined the union. The three townships remained united, with Arran Township as the senior township, until January 1, 1861 when Arran Township separated to become, and remain, an independent township until 1999. Within the geographical area of Arran Township, the community of Tara grew in population and incorporated as a Village on January 1, 1881. In January 1999, Arran Township, Tara, Elderslie Township, Chesley, and Paisley amalgamated to form the Municipality of Arran-Elderslie in January 1999. ELDERSLIE TOWNSHIP The first Elderslie Township settlers, Simon Orchard and Samuel Rowe, arrived in spring 1851 via the Saugeen River. The township was surveyed in the summer of 1851 and lots opened for official occupation and sale in July 1852. In 1853, when the United Townships of the County of Bruce dissolved, Elderslie Township united with Arran Township, with Arran as the senior township for municipal governance purposes. As of January 1, 1856, the union was dissolved and Elderslie Township became a separate and independent township. Within Elderslie Township, the communities of both Chesley and Paisley developed, with Paisley first incorporating as a village by County by-law dated June 7, 1873. Chesley incorporated as a Village through County by-law passed December 12, 1879. In 1906, Chesley became a town. In January 1999, Elderslie Township, Chesley, Paisley, Arran Township and Tara amalgamated to form the Municipality of Arran-Elderslie in January 1999. Sources: a) Mika,Nick and Helma Mika.
