Frederick Rodney Baxter was born on January 8, 1926 in Barton, Nova Scotia. While Fred was on a ship sailing to Labrador for a job, it was torpedoed in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Upon being rescued by Quebec farmers, Fred enlisted in the RCAF in August of 1943. During World War II, he was a Flying Officer and Wireless Air Gunner in the Husky Squadron 437.Fred served in Canada and Europe until his discharge on July 29, 1946. Fred was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and clasp and the WAG badge. Fred remained in Toronto and was employed with AVRO, Garnet Redi-Mix and Versa Food Services. He then retired to Wiarton and had been a member of the Wiarton Legion Branch 208 for a period of forty-five years. On Januray 13, 2015, Fred passed away at the Gateway Haven Nursing Home in Wiarton. |
