Sibling J.W. Burns. James took in his niece Marie Gorham (daughter of Emma (Burns) Gorham) when Emma died in 1916. Marie took over household chores and would have helped in the bakery as well. |

James participated in the Burns family baking business in Southampton, believed to have been started by his mother Ann (Tranter) Burns, possibly around 1896. He was later joined by his brother, Mr. Josiah W. Burns ("Josh"), to establish the firm of Burns Bros. James and his brother Ben also travelled back and forth to Bradford Pennsylvania to work as painters there. He was Mayor of Southampton, 1932. He was prominent in fraternal circles, being a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. In 1911, he was DDGM of Bruce and Huron. He was a devoted member of the Southampton United Church. |

Born in Lucknow in 1865. May have resided in Goderich with his family around 1867. He came to Southampton with his parents in 1896, opened a baking business in which he was later joined by his brother, Mr. J.W. Burns to establish the firm of Burns Bros. He also spent time in Bradford, Pensylvania. |
