John C. (Jack) Campbell was born in Vespra township in Simcoe County near Barrie. He came to Bruce County in 1939 and worked as a barber in Lucknow. He also worked at Maple Leaf Aircraft Corporation Limited, Lucknow, in 1944 and 1945. In 1947, he took over the position of lighthouse keeper of the Point Clark lighthouse in 1947. His predescessor was also Jack Campbell (of Amberley) although he was no relation. According to the Mildmay Gazette on April 10, 1947, "The new lightkeeper at Point Clark will be Jack Campbell of Lucknow. Oddly enough he succeeds Jack Campbell of Amberley who ahs been the efficient keeper for the past eight years, but has reached the retiring age." Jack Campbell was lighthouse keeper from 1947 to 1962 and was the last lighthouse keeper of Point Clark lighthouse before electricty was installed and it became automatic. He and his wife Lillian Tremaine had two daughters, Audrey and Islay. He later married Greta Campbell of Ashfield Township. After he retired as lighthouse keeper, he and his wife moved to Kincardine. "The last man to operate the light, Jack C. Campbell, will remain until the end of the navigation season when he will officially be retired from his position, one that he has held for sixteen years without failing to turn on the light each evening. Every night he climbed the one hundred and fourteen stairs to the top of the massive structure to send the warning beam out onto the lake." (Lucknow Sentinel, Oct 17. 1962) |
