Occupation |
Hugh Clark was a school teacher, journalist, Lieutenant Colonel in the 32nd Bruce Regiment (1906-1911) and both a Provincial and Federal politician. He was raised on a farm on Concession 10, Kincardine Township. After leaving the farm, he taught at a nearby rural school. At age 23, he purchased the weekly Kincardine Review in Kincardine, Ontario, after writing as a weekly correspondent for the paper. While retaining control of the Kincardine Review, he also was editor of the Ottawa Citizen for two years and spent some time in the Press Gallery at Toronto before returning to the Kincardine newspaper. He was also editor at Walkerton's Bruce Herald for a period of time. He was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 1902 as the Conservative member for Bruce Centre, and held that seat until he resigned in 1911 to enter Federal politics. He was elected Member of Parliament representing North Bruce in 1917 and served until 1921 as a member of the Unionist Party. During that time, he worked under Sir Robert Borden. He was appointed parliamentary secretary of Militia and Defence from 1918 to 1920. Clark was defeated when he ran for reelection as a Conservative in 1921, 1925 and 1926. In 1921, he returned to the Kincardine Review until 1925 when he sold his interest in the paper to Kincardine Reporter Owner J.J. Hunter. He continued writing, however, and his column appeared in a number of newspapers across Canada. |
