W.A. Gerolamy was an Iron Founder and General Merchant. "W.A. Gerolamy was an inventive genius. From the time he came into the fanning-mill business with John and James Tobey, about 1857, the business prospered. He eventually manufactured every kind of farm implement and made specific improvements on almost all of them." ("Tara Before 1981" by Bruce A. Miller) W.A. Gerolamy took out the patent for perforated zinc for sieves in fanning mills. His fanning-mills in particular were world-famous and he won world championships with them. In 1870, he also formed a partnership with John Tobey in the General store business. In 1881, he started his own general store, known first as The Lion, and later as The Golden Lion. W.A. was also one of the proprietors of the Tara Creamery and an important grain buyer on the Owen Sound market. He was a member of the first Tara Village Council. He was active in the Tara Methodist Church. |
