He attended a rural school in Normanby Township, near Varney, graduating in 1913. He attended high school in Durham, Ontario. He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1925. He was called to the bar in October 1925. |
Occupation |
He practiced law in Walkerton from 1925-1962 at 206 Durham Street, during which time he had a reputation of being very difficult to beat in front of a jury. He also acted as special proscutor in the Kendall murder trial. He was named as Judge to the Ontario Supreme Court of Justice in 1962. Mr. Justice Grant retired in 1977. He was reeve of Walkerton from 1927-1932, warden of Bruce County in 1933, and mayor of Walkerton from 1935-1938. He was a charter Kinsmen when the club was formed and remained a member throughout his life (becoming a member of the K 40 Club when too old to hold office). He was a member of the Walkerton Rotary Club since 1983, acting as secretary for many years. He was also a member of the United Church of Walkerton. |

He grew up in Normanby Township, on a farm near Varney. His law practice was located at 206 Durham St., Walkerton (just east of Hartley House Hotel - the ground floor was occupied for years by Dominion Stores). After marrying in 1962, he resided with his wife in a beautiful red brick home at 620 Gibson Street. |
Titles & Honours |
He earned the highest award of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1985. The first Walkertonian ever to be named to the Order of Canada in 1986. The citation said he was given the honour because of his fairness and compassion in dealing with civil and criminal cases and his devoted service as head of royal commissions. In 1992, he was named a "Paul Harris Fellow" by the Walkerton Rotary Club in recognition of contributions to the club and Walkerton community. |
