Arthur Frederick Haley was born on September 13, 1915 in Burlington, Ontario. Art has become an honoured citizen of Wiarton in his dedication to the community. Art began his working career in market gardening seasonal work at the Canadian Canners. In 1935, he worked on the Hamilton Street Railway. Art was then employed at the International Harvest Company (IHC) in 1943. On February 27, 1944, Art enlisted in the Army with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, Infantry 3rd. Division. During World War II, he served in Belgium, England, France and Holland. Art was discharged from the army on March 13, 1946. Upon his return from the war, Art purchased a 25 acres farm in west Flamboro. He married Lily Wismer and raised six children. He then returned to working at the International Harvest Company and remained working there for thirty-seven years. Upon moving to Wiarton, Art became a member of the Royal Canadian Wiarton Legion Branch 208 in 1995. He was instrumental in his role on the Executive Committee and in particular in developing the youth education program and preserving World War II memorabilia. Art was awarded a life membership in the Canadian Legion in 2012. In recognition of Art's twenty years of volunteering as librarian at the school library, the Peninsula Shores District Library was dedicated in his honour. The dedication took place on May 18th. 2012. On January 13, 2015, Art was awarded the Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour from France. Art received the 2016 Ontario Senior of the Year Award on September 20, 2016 in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula council chamber. Art has also been instrumental as an author and published a weekly column in the Wiarton Echo and is a poetry writer. |
