Occupation |
Mervyn Hopkinson was a physician in Wiarton to Tobermory area. Dr. Hopkinson arrived in Bruce County in 1951 with his spouse husband Dr. Norma Hopkinson. They were known as "The Flying Doctors" as they covered 1,000 square miles of practice territory often getting around in their Cessa 172, a single-engine aircraft. At one point in their careers, they were the only husband and wife team in the Commonwealth. Both were instrumental in the construction of a community hospital in Lion's Head in the late 1950's. They donated some of their land for the build. Dr. Mervyn died tragically in a house fire. At the time of his death, he had served the community for twenty-five years. |
