Occupation |
Dr. Norma Hopkinson received her medical degree from the University of Western Ontario. She first practiced medicine in Orillia before moving to Bruce County in 1951 with her husband Dr. Mervyn Hopkinson. Her and her husband were known as "The Flying Doctors" as they covered 1,000 square miles of practice territory often getting around in their Cessa 172, a single-engine aircraft. At one point in her career Norma Hopkinson was only one of two women coroners in Ontario, and the only husband and wife team in the Commonwealth. Both doctors were instrumental in the construction of the Lion's Head community hospital in the late 1950's. They even donated some of their land for the build. Dr. Hopkinson served as a physician in the Wiarton to Tobermory area for more than 40 years and was the presiding physician at more than 1,500 births. She eventually retired in 1991. |
