Wesley Nelson Howe was born on April 22, 1900, to parents Mary Jane (nee Goodman) and William Howe. He was the youngest of four brothers.

On June 29, 1927, he married Isobell MacKinnon. Wesley and Isobell farmed land on 14th Concession of Bruce Township for nearly 50 years, until retiring to Port Elgin in 1979. Together they had two children: a son, Leslie, and a daughter, Gwen.

Wesley began competitive plowing when he was 22 years old, and went on to win many competitions accross the province. Notably, he took home the prize for Best Plow Ridge amongst Grey/Bruce competitors at the 1933 International Plowing Match in Owen Sound. He became esteemed for his skill in high cut plowing, and used a custom-made plow forged by local blacksmith J.H. Seiffert.
