John Philemon Johnstone was born on July 20,1920 in Walkerton, Ontario. J.P. spent four years overseas in the 19th Field Regiment "800 Technical Wing" and he had enlisted with the army on September 13, 1941. JP had been wounded and in March of 1945, he was placed on strength of the RCAF 666 Air Operations Squadron. On March 20, 1946, JP was discharged with the designation of Battery Sergeant Major. JP was awarded the France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the 1939-45 War Medal. In 1952, he bought 1800 acres of property which became known as "Hidden Valley Lodge." It was a beef cattle farm and lumber operation, as well as a tourist business. Motel units were built in 1963 and 1967 and the accommodations were known by photographers, naturalists, hikers and artists. JP was very active in his community. Roles he fulfilled included: school trustee, Reeve of St. Edmunds Township, chairman of the Bruce Peninsula Planning Board, director of the Peninsula Bruce Trail Club, and president of the Grey-Bruce Tourist Council. In 1973, he was appointed to the Niagara Escarpment Commission as the representative for Bruce County. JP was also involved in politics in the role of Mayor of St. Edmunds Township for ten years and as Warden of Bruce County in 1974. JP was a member of theTobermory Legion Branch 290 and passed away on April 19, 1978. |
