Gilbert Steele McLaughlin was born on August 2, 1867 in Elderslie Township near Salem to an Irish father Robert McLaughlin and an English mother Jane Jardine. Gilbert was one of seven children. He lived and worked on the McLaughlin family farm on Concession 10, lot 14 for most of his young life. He married Catherine Elizabeth (Kate) Haug of Saugeen on January 21, 1903 and the couple continued to life on the family farm. On Christmas day the same year the couple welcomed a daughter Olive Christina. Three years later the couple welcomed a second daughter Ethel Adelaide. Gilbert became sick in 1918 and moved the family to Scone (while retaining the northeast corner of concession 10, lot 14, Elderslie Twp) where, on August 11, 1922, Gilbert passed away from pernicious anemia. Gilbert was buried on August 13, 1922 in Gillies Hill, Salem Presbyterian Cemetry, Salem on Concession 10 in Elderslie Township. He shares a headstone with his parents.
