Ernest E. Short was the editor and proprietor of the Southampton, Ontario newspaper "The Beacon" and an active public-spirited citizen. As a young man, Ernest apprenticed himself to the printing trade in the office of the Lindsay Post, under the direction of the late Sir Sam Hughes. He later moved to Toronto where he held positions with the Wilson Publishing Co. and the firm of Kilgour Bros. In 1906, Ernest came to Southampton and purchased "The Beacon." He was also involved in local politics and served as a member of the town council and as Mayor for two terms from 1924-1925. Ernest occupied the seat as mayor while the fight was on for Hydro in the town. |
